How to Convert Tags to Categories or Vice Versa Karlo December 30, 2013. 1 Converting tags to categories (or vice versa) isn’t a very common practice and as such this feature was never implemented into WordPress by default. Most of the time people are forced to seek this solution when they migrate from other blogging services such as Blogger (Blogspot) to WordPress. The confusion starts when you try to import your posts – you realize that Blogger only has “labels” which will be converted into tags and you don’t really have any say in the matter. Now, if you have a smaller number of tags and categories that need to be converted you could just do it manually. Simply put, this means that you should delete the respected tags and create the appropriate category (or vice versa). However, if there are just too many to work with, then you should certainly get a plugin to get the job done. Taxonomy Converter There aren’t that many plugins available that can do this properly and as such we would like to recommend the only stable release, a plugin called taxonomy converter. This plugin allows you to duplicate, merge and simply convert tags and categories automatically based on your chosen criteria and methods. When I moved a larger Blogger website into WordPress a few years ago I resorted to using this plugin and I was quite pleased with the outcome. I was rather pleased since I was able to import over 200 posts and quickly got to adjust their labels into proper WordPress taxonomy! This plugin was actually constructed on top of another great plugin called Categories to Tag importer, but sadly this plugin hasn’t been updated in more than two years! If you are a developer than it may be worth your time to get the plugin, examine its code and implement your own solution and share it with the community as there are not that many plugins that can convert tags and categories.
